Responsibilities: Design and construction of news- and feature-related special sections for azcentral.com, as well as the design of commercial web sites for clients.

Highlights: Design and maintenance of Arizona Republic special photography features (including Photos of the Year (1999-2001) and Photos of the Month (2000-present)), the sitewide redesign of azcentral.com, two redesigns of the azcentral.com entertainment section (which won a 2001 EPpy from Editor & Publisher for best entertainment section in a newspaper online service), as well as working on commercial sites for the Arizona Cardinals, Champions on Ice, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, KAET-PBS, and the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.


Arizona State University Student Media

ASU Student Media encompasses the main student publications on the Arizona State University campus. Student Media publications include the daily (M-F) State Press newspaper, the weekly entertainment-oriented State Press Magazine, the WebDevil Web site, Channel 2 and the Hayden's Ferry Review literary magazine.

» Editor, statepress.com/ASU WebDevil (Mar. 1999 - Dec. 1999)
Responsibilities: Coordinate online operations for statepress.com, the Web site for ASU's student newspaper, the State Press. My duties included overseeing daily news updates to the site, as well as planning and executing long-term projects.
Highlights: Among the special projects we launched were DevilJams (an MP3 site featuring local bands), a local entertainment section and a number of special online-only news features. Statepress.com won Best Overall Online Newspaper for two years in a row (1999 & 2000) in the annual Society for Professional Journalists Region 11 college competition.

Responsibilities: Completely redesigned the campus weekly entertainment and culture magazine. Designed/paginated every issue. Edited story content and suggested/approved story ideas. Served as reporter on occasion, even writing the cover story one week.
Highlights: Won two awards (both honorable mention) for SPM page design in the 2000 Gold Circle Awards, sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

» Freelance Reporter, State Press (Jan. 1998 - Dec. 1998)
Responsibilities: Periodically wrote news and feature stories for the State Press, usually based on my own story ideas.
Highlights: A feature story I wrote about a company contracted to clean up roadkill won an honorable mention for in-depth news/feature in the 2000 Gold Circle Awards, sponsored by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

» Graphic Designer, State Press (Aug. 1997 - Dec. 1999)
Responsibilities: Worked evenings laying out the next day's paper, usually working on the front page, op/ed and sometimes the sports section. I received layout sketches from news/editorial staff, and they frequently gave me a wide latitude to be creative with my designs.
Highlights: From January to December 1998, I was the lead student designer in the department, meaning that I also was the assistant night production supervisor, filling in for the supervisor when she was out. These responsibilities included printing Quark XPress pages to negative, checking color separations, and making sure all ads had printed correctly and were present before giving them to the printer.

I served a number of roles, from copy editor to reporter to designer, at this community weekly, where I worked during my summer and winter breaks from school.

Responsibilities: Paginated much of the paper on a weekly basis, copy edited stories from contributors and reported on local events and personalities.
